Rail Transport

NTU's Involvement in the Railway Sub-Sector

NTU recognises the advantages that a rail transport network and an efficient operating service provide to economic development. We are therefore committed to improving the performance, modal competitiveness, efficiency, safety, and environmental footprint of rail network systems around the globe. Through a series of projects implemented in Europe, Asia, and Africa, NTU provides consultancy and technical assistance, which aims at updating operations and developing innovative strategies. Feasibility studies, investment assessments, railways planning and capacity-building activities are central to these efforts, contributing to the strategic improvement of railway lines.

NTU's work in the railway sub-sector involves the rehabilitation and modernisation of railway lines across Europe, Africa, and Asia. This included technical feasibility assessments such as demand and options analysis, cost benefit analysis, transport modelling and forecasting, and social impact assessment. We also cover civil works, track, electrification and other installations in conventional and high-speed railways and railway infrastructure, as well as railway signalling, rolling stock, and maintenance of depots and other associated facilities. NTU also has experience evaluating institutional viability, assessing technical specifications, ensuring compliance with EU interoperability standards, reviewing, and aligning national railway legislation with the EU directives, as well as facilitating procurement strategies and competitive tender processes for railway infrastructure projects.

NTU is also contributing to the integration of railways within broader transport corridors, emphasising the alignment of railways with intermodal logistics systems and maritime transport, supporting seamless connectivity across regions. Our expertise in railway development is driving modernisation, improving operations, and fostering seamless connectivity. Through implementing strategic projects in the sub-sector in the last two decades, NTU has played a significant role in enhancing rail infrastructure and aligning it with broader transport networks, leaving a lasting impact on the sub-sector.
