Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable institutions
A just society is a strong society. Compassion and ethical guidance are vital to any democratic system. However, persecution, injustice, and abuse remain widespread, undermining the very fabric of civilisation. As of May 2023, forced displacement has reached record levels, with over 110 million people fleeing conflict, persecution, and violations of their rights. Civilian casualties have also surged to the highest levels since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda. These ongoing threats to human security highlight the urgent need to rebuild peaceful, inclusive institutions and strengthen global frameworks for peace and security to address calls for peace from around the world.
To ensure having strong institutions, global standards of justice and true commitment to peace everywhere must be observed. SDG 16 focuses on promotion of these standards, ensuring equal access to justice, and building strong, accountable institutions at all levels.
