Ports, Shipping and People: Safety and Competencies in the Decarbonisation Era
On 23–24 September 2026 in Manila, the EU-ASEAN Sustainable Connectivity Package – Seafarers: Technical Assistance, implemented by NTU International A/S, together with the Global Ports Safety Project, implemented by Expertise France, organised a two-day international workshop bringing together over 100 maritime professionals and stakeholders.
The workshop gathered representatives from ASEAN Member States, the European Union, Australia and the Philippines, including public authorities, port and maritime organisations, shipping and industry stakeholders, maritime education and training institutions, emergency response organisations and international partners.
Discussions focused on key issues shaping the future of the maritime sector, including decarbonisation and alternative marine fuels, port and maritime safety, emergency preparedness, and the evolving competencies and training needs of seafarers.
The workshop provided a valuable platform for exchanging expertise and strengthening regional and international cooperation, while exploring how safety, sustainability, the green transition and digitalisation can be further integrated into maritime policies, institutional practices and training programmes.
Through this joint initiative, the EU-ASEAN Sustainable Connectivity Package – Seafarers: Technical Assistance continues to contribute to stronger institutional and individual capacities, enhanced ASEAN cooperation on STCW implementation, and a safer and more sustainable maritime sector. We remain committed to fostering cooperation, knowledge exchange and capacity development across the maritime sector, supporting ASEAN partners in navigating the green transition while ensuring that safety, skills and people remain at the heart of this transformation.
