NTU International Strengthens Road Safety Across Key African Transport Corridors. Ghana Pilot in Action!

In the past week, the AfroSAFE project and NTU International A/S, as part of its Consortium, have marked important milestones in strengthening road safety and emergency response systems across its partner countries. As a Horizon Europe initiative, AfroSAFE focuses on radically improving road safety, including post-crash care in Ghana, Zambia, and Tanzania. Below, we highlight two key developments that mark the project’s momentum and strategic progress:

Brussels Review Meeting - WP6 Post-Crash Care Updates

At a periodic review meeting in Brussels, the NTU team presented updates on Work Package 6 (Post-Crash Care) of AfroSAFE. We highlighted several achievements: a comprehensive mapping of post-crash response stakeholders and initiatives, identification of critical needs and gaps in current post-crash care systems, and the development of detailed, country-specific action plans for Tanzania, Ghana, and Zambia. With these foundations laid, work on pilot project implementation is now ongoing as we transition from planning to practical action.

First Post-Crash Care Pilot - Winneba, Ghana

NTU, in cooperation with UEW (University of Education, Winneba), recently completed the first post-crash care pilot training program in Winneba, Ghana - a major step forward in translating plans into practice. This two-day integrated training held by NTU’s Post-Crash Care Expert engaged 24 first responders from Emergency Medical Services, Fire & Rescue, Police, the Ghana Red Cross, and the NGO M360. Participants gave the training excellent feedback (averaging 4–5 out of 5 in evaluations) and demonstrated high engagement throughout the sessions.

- Participant Insights: Trainees emphasised the need to expand first responder training into communities and showed interest in school-based emergency safety education. They also called for broader, more regular multi-agency training sessions as their enthusiasm showcased the value of a collaborative, cross-agency approach.
- Path Forward: While developing formal post-crash response guidelines proved ambitious to achieve in a two-day workshop, the pilot laid crucial groundwork. Stakeholders left with a shared commitment to continue this work, pledging to refine and implement post-crash care guidelines together and to further strengthen inter-agency coordination moving ahead.

Similar workshops are also planned in Zambia and Tanzania in near future.
These developments show AfroSAFE’s momentum in action and the strong commitment of both European and African partners to improve post-crash care. Building on this success, NTU remains dedicated to advancing our pilot initiatives and turning these insights into life-saving practices on Africa’s roads.
