Depolluting the Mediterranean sea

Depolluting the Mediterranean sea

NTU supported MeHSIP II Initiative managed by the European Investment Bank and succeeding to the Mediterranean Hot Spots Investment Programme – Project Preparation and Implementation Facility (“MeHSIP-PPIF”). The Initiative sought to promote adequate and sound water, wastewater and solid waste management in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Tunisia in order to contribute towards achieving the Horizon 2020 goal of de-polluting the Mediterranean Sea. To support this goal, NTU contributed with technical support to the European Investment Bank in their project pipeline in Egypt.

Project Set Up Structures Updated

Implementation

For the realisation of this project, NTU was responsible for the project set-up structures for the development of the MeHSIP II Work Programme and Annual Action Plans, that lead to the technical advice and assistance in a pipeline project and wastewater infrastructures. Relevant national authorities, key external parties and associates were put together in order to identify and prioritise projects including Integrated Depollution projects, Upgrading Wastewater Treatment plants, MedProgramme Support projects and Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Rehabilitation. All of them were in line with the Horizon 2020 goal and the construction of a pipeline financed by the EIB. As a further step, support for the supply component was provided, advising on project preparation and implementation matters to water- and solid waste authorities. We prepared ToRs for feasibility studies, supervised the technical assistance, and organised capacity building seminars and activities at national and regional level. Finally, contractual and technical management tasks were carried out, as well as environmental and social responsibility reports.
