The air of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital city, Sarajevo, faces significant air pollution challenges, primarily due to traffic emissions and its geographical layout, which traps pollutants within the city's valleys. The vast majority of vehicles are diesel-powered and fall short of meeting the Euro 6 emissions standards, complicating the efforts to achieve clean air targets. To address these issues, the Net Zero Mission Sarajevo Functional Urban Area (FUA) programme has been launched by the EU to help Sarajevo Canton transition to sustainable ways of transportation and adopt the City’s Climate Neutrality Action Plan. The specific objectives of the Assignment are: delivering studies and reports and forming a roadmap for policy adoption to solve the air quality problem in Sarajevo.
Implementation
NTU is providing comprehensive support to the Net Zero Mission – Sarajevo Functional Urban Area project through a series of targeted technical assistance tasks. First, a thorough analysis of relevant data is to be conducted to identify gaps in existing policies and implementation measures, paving the way for the formulation of sector-specific plans. Relevant dialogues between the stakeholders and citizens are to be facilitated to ensure the viability of the programme formulation. After developing a monitoring plan, and addressing the city’s financial viability, the Sarajevo FUA NetZeroCities Roadmap and Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan Scoping will be delivered. This programme will constitute a cornerstone to the long-term plans of the Sarajevo Functional Urban Area programme, serving as a basis for future urban infrastructure and transportation investments.
