During the first quarter of 2025, the TA for Nigeria Solar for Health Project (NISHP) financed by the Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS and implemented by NTU International A/S, made significant strides towards improving primary healthcare services through sustainable energy solutions.

The project initiated the implementation phase at the State Level through a series of activities:

Inaugural State Steering Committee meeting in Ogun State (January 6, 2025) - The meeting brought together key state officials: Commissioners for Finance and Chief Economic Advisor to the State Governor, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, the Executive Secretary, Ogun State Primary Healthcare Board and the Special Adviser on SDGS to the State Government. Discussions focused on project expectations, timelines, site selection criteria, and the importance of state counterpart funding. Ogun State leadership reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring project success.

EU High-level mission to Plateau State (January 24-29, 2025) - The TA team joined the EU delegation’s mission to Plateau State during which:

  •  Conducted site visits to the Assop waterfalls (potential location to site a 1mWp turbine with funding support from the EU) and two mini-grids in Qua’an Pan (with combined capacities of over 300kWp and serving over 1000 connections).
  •  Attended the Clean Cooking sensitisation workshop and roadshow to promote clean cooking solutions in the State.
  • Prepared and attended the launch of the TA NISHP project in the State.

Delivered three Energy Audit and baseline data collection training in:

  • Plateau State (January 22-23, 2025): Conducted a 2-day energy audit and baseline data collection training for up to 60 selected members from the Plateau State Energy Corporation and the State Primary Healthcare Board.
  • Akwa Ibom State (29 January – 1 February): Approx. 80 participants from the Ministries of Power and Primary Healthcare were trained in data collection methodologies. Moreover, between 27 and 28 February 2025, the TA team conducted field exercises for energy audits and health-related data collection, ensuring the project is data-driven.
  • Enugu State (March 4-5, 2025): Up to 40 enumerators from the State Electrification Agency and the Primary Healthcare Board attended a training session in preparation for collecting energy and health data across 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
These initiatives underscore the transformative potential of sustainable energy in strengthening healthcare systems. NTU is grateful for the support of EU and other stakeholders in making this vision a reality.
